Cambodia Guide > Travel Around Cambodia

The Wonderful Angkor Wat temple as seen from a distance. The magnificence of which is simply breathtaking. The great architect whoever he was remains a great mystery until today.

Getting Around

There are really plenty to see in Cambodia. Below are some tips for the first-time visitor. The information provided here may be useful should you have plans to tour around the individual towns or provinces.

Siemreap

Home To Angkor Wat
  By Boat:
Fast boats to and from Siem Reap leave every morning between 6.30 and 7am. They cost $25 one-way for foreigners, although many guesthouses and hotels can now obtain tickets for you for as little as $22. Khmers pay 60,000 riel. Rooftop tickets cost the same as inside tickets, and although many people consider the roof of often overcrowded boats safer, the Cambodian sun is merciless and there is no shade on the roof. The trip takes approximately five hours and the scenery is beautiful.
   By Road:
A taxi will set a foreigner back 35,000 riel. Khmers pay around 30,000 riel. Taxis leave Psar Thmei from 5am to 2pm, and (allegedly) from 2pm to as late as 9pm, although this is rare. Pick-up trucks cost 25,000 riel for a seat in the cabin, or 10,000 riel for a seat in the back. The trip takes approximately eight hours. The road is reasonable as far as Kampong Thom, but has reportedly been upgraded recently from Kampong Thom on.
   By Motorbike:
The same as for road travelers. The road is generally good enough for most competent riders and considered secure. A recent edict forbade foreign tourists from hiring bikes in town, but this does not seem to have been enforced.
   Helicopter Rides:
Flights can easily be booked. Call (855) 23 213 133 or

Siem Reap

Sihanoukville

Surf 'n' Seafood
   By Road:
Widely considered to be the best road in Cambodia, air-conditioned buses run Route 4 between Sihanoukville and Phnom Penh daily between 6.55am and 2pm. There are three bus companies plying this route and they leave from terminals along the main road in Sihanoukville, or from well-marked terminals at the south-western corner of Central Market in Phnom Penh. Tickets cost 12,000 riel. The trip takes just four hours. Taxis, minibuses and pick-ups also leave from Psar Thmei. Taxis cost 10,000 riel, minibuses 7,000 riel and pickups 7,000 riel for the cabin and 5,000 riel for the back. These vehicles take between two and a half and three and a half hours, depending on the individual driver's regard for life and limb. Be forewarned--a good road can induce insanity in some Cambodian drivers! For a less crowded trip, a whole taxi can be yours for about $20 to $25 one way.
   By Motorbike:
You can hire trail bikes in both Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville. But a warning-- Sihanoukville town has a very high rate of accidents due to the relatively good condition of the roads combined with blind corners and sharply turning streets. Many a foreigner has ridden a motorbike down there only to come back to Phnom Penhin an ambulance. Medical facilities in Sihanoukville are better than in many places but certainly not state-of-the-art.

Kok kong

Gateway to Koh Kong
   By Boat:
The boat from Sihanoukville costs foreigners 600 baht and departs at 11am daily. The trip takes about three hours. You can also board the boat at Sre Ambel in Kampong Speu province and tickets from here are slightly cheaper. The boat is actually designed for river trips and not open water and the trip can be quite rough, especially during wet season.
   By Road and Motorbike:
There are several road routes to Koh Kong province. The route to Sihanoukville is under repair and nearing completion. All the others are in poor or very poor condition and impassable in wet season. When the new road is completed, this is expected to be a more convenient and comfortable way to travel than the boat. Until then, this is a motorbike trip for experienced riders only and should only be attempted in groups.
   By Air:
More than one domestic airline flies to Koh Kong. Tickets cost about $45 plus $10 domestic departure tax and the trip takes just 40 minutes. A highly recommended alternative.

Kampot

Waterfalls and Wildlife
   By Road:
The road to Kampot province is in reasonable condition by Cambodian standards. Minibuses cost 5,000 riel, taxis 10,000 riel and pickups 4,000 riel. All leave from Psar Daem Kor (near the Intercontinental Hotel) from 5am to about 4pm and the trip takes between three and three and a half hours. There are also taxis to Kampot from Sihanoukville, which cost about 8,000 riel and leave from Sihanoukville’s main market.
   By Train:
Trains leave the station at about 6.30am on alternate days. The trip is officially six hours, but in practice it usually takes much longer. It is very cheap, though, at just 2,800 riel.
   By Motorbike:
The Kampot-Phnom Penh road is very scenic and not particularly challenging for experienced riders. Rental is now available in Kampot town at a shop near the roundabout. The Bokor Mountain road is still in very poor condition, but the road to Sihanoukville is reportedly vastly improved.

KampongChnang

Pottery
   By Road:
Taxis and pickups leave Psar Thmei every day from 4am until about 5pm. The trip takes two to three hours on good road and costs 6,000 and 4,000 riel respectively. Ho Wah Genting buses ply the route for 4,500 riel from 6.15am until 4pm and take two and a half hours.
   By Boat:
The boat to Siem Reap stops at Kampong Chhnang town. There are also numerous slow boat options.
   By Motorbike:
There’s no trail bike hire in Kampong Chhnang.

Pursat

Marble Province
  By Road:
Taxis, minibuses and pickups leave Psar Thmei all morning. Taxis cost 10,000 riel and take four and a half hours. Pickups cost 12,000 for a cabin seat and 6,000 in the back and take the same time. Minibuses take five to six hours and cost 8,000 riel. The road is in poor condition.
   By Train:
The train takes an entire day but costs just 45 riel per kilometer for foreigners and 15 riel for Khmers. It leaves on alternate days.
   By Motorbike:
Roads in Pursat are typically poor and some more remote roads may not be secure. Ask locals and NGO workers in the area about safety and road conditions.

More Information About Pursat

Battambang

The Second City
   By Road:
The road between Kampong Chhnang and Battambang is very poor. Taxis leave Psar Thmei from 4am and cost 30,000 riel. Pickups leave from the same place. Cabin seats are 20,000 riel and the back is 10,000 riel. The trip takes about eight hours.
   By Train:
The costs are the same as for Pursat province. This takes a full day.
   By Air:
Battambang has an airport and receives regular flights. Contact domestic carriers for details on fares. This is by far the most comfortable option.
   By Motorbike:
Local motodops may be persuaded to rent bikes to foreigners at day rates.

More Information About Battambang

Palin

Gem Town
   By Road and Motorbike:
The road to Pailin has been upgraded and is in good condition. From Battambang, take a taxi from Psar Leu for 200 baht. Trip takes two hours.

More Information About Pailin

Kampong Cham

River City
   By Road:
Two companies supply a bus service that leaves Psar Thmei in Phnom Penh from 6.45am until 4pm. The journey takes two and a half hours on a good road. Buses cost 7,000 riel. Taxis cost 8,000 riel and take two hours. Minibuses cost 5,000 riel.
   By Boat:
Fast boats to Kratie stop in Kampong Cham and leave the terminal along Route 5 past the Japanese Friendship Bridge between 6.30 and 7am. They cost about 20,000 riel and take about two hours.
   By Motorbike:
Rent a big bike in Phnom Penh.

More Information About Kampong Cham

Kratie

Home To Dolphins
   By Road
Few people attempt to travel to Kratie by road as it is in terrible condition and the boat is a more appealing option, but taxis do go from Kampong Cham's market area if you are really keen to take this route.
   By Boat:
See Kampong Cham section for catching the boat from Phnom Penh. From Kampong Cham to Kratie, boats cost 15,000 riel. From Phnom Penh all the way, they cost about double. There are also slow boats from Phnom Penh and Kampong Cham.
   By Motorbike:
There is reportedly motorbike rental in Kratie, but this may be 125cc. To avoid the bad road, you can put a trail bike on a boat from Phnom Penh for a very reasonable fee.

More Information About Kratie

Stung treng

Gateway to Stung Treng
   By Road
There are taxis between here and Kratie. However, this was deemed highly insecure for some time, and many locals and all embassies still advise against it, although it has become a popular backpacker route. Ask in Kratie about the current security status.
   By Boat:
Slow boats have been targeted by bandits along the Kratie - Stung Treng stretch of the Mekong. Fast boats are an option in wet season especially, but again there have been safety concerns. Enquire in Kratie.
   By Air:
Stung Treng receives reasonably regular flights.
   By Motorbike:
Ask locals about the most recent security information in Kratie. If you insist on making this trip, do so in a group and do not travel in the evening or at night.

More Information About Stung Treng

Rattanak Kiri

Hill Tribe Hikes
   By Road and Motorbike:
The road between Stung Treng and Rattanak Kiri is now in good condition and is well-traveled.
   By Air:
Flights leave Phnom Penh six days a week.

More Information About Rattanak Kiri

Mondul Kiri

Peaceful Isolation
   By Road
Pickups leave Psar Thmei between 6.30 and 7am. It is wise to book the night before to ensure a seat. Cost is 50,000 riel and the journey takes 12 hours, although in wet season you will probably stay one night in Snoul.
   By Air:
  Mondulkiri has an airstrip.
   By Motorbike:
The road is very bad in parts, but a logging road from Chhlong will take you almost to the capital of Sen Monorom and is in great condition. Do not travel in the evening or after dark, however. The area around Snoul has been known to harbor bandits.

More Information About Mondul Kiri

Kampong Thom

Lost Temple
   By Road
Taxis and pickups leave Psar Thmei between 6am and 12pm and cost 6,000 and 4,000 riel respectively. Journey takes from two to three hours.
   By Motorbike:
The road is in reasonable condition for most of the way, although it deteriorates badly just north of town and becomes very bad on the way to Siem Reap and awful on the route to Preah Vihear. No trail bike hire is available in Kampong Thom. Most roads other than the main one are poor and for experienced riders only.

More Information About Kampong Thom

Svay Rieng

   By Board:
A ferry leaves Neak Loeung regularly from 4am to 3pm.
   By Motorbike:
The road to Prey Veng is bad, but the roads around the province are worse and sometimes little more than tracks. Experienced riders only.

* Ho Wa Genting buses leave for Neak Loeung from 6am daily and cost 4000 riel, or take local transport from Psar Chbar Ampou.

More Information About Prey Veng

Takeo

Cradle of Cambodia
   By Road:
Taxis, minibuses and pickups leave from right in front of the Sorya Restaurant, south west of Psar Thmei, and cost between 3500 and 5000 riel. Ho Wah Genting also runs air-conditioned buses from Psar Thmei from 7am until 4pm for 4,500 riel. The trip takes about two hours and the road is reasonable but not great.
   By Motorbike:
Hire trail bikes in the capital. Motor drivers from Phnom Penh or Takeo town will take tourists to Phnom Chiso, Ta Prohm and Tonle Bati for a day rate. But negotiate first.

More Information About Takeo

Kampong Speu

Palm Province
   By Road:
Ho Wah Genting buses will drop passengers in Kampong Speu town between 6am and 5.30pm for 2,500 riel. The last bus back is at 5pm. Taxis, minibuses and pickups leave from Psar Depot Market and are inexpensive.
   By Motorbike:
The road to the provincial capital is very good and the trip should take under an hour. Kampong Speu is a big province, however, and many lesser-used roads are very poor to next to impassable. There may also be security problems in more remote areas.
