From
the turn of the century through the 1960s Krong
Kep was Cambodia's 'beach town', drawing weekend
holiday-makers to its picturesque shores, and
sporting the ocean side villas of the privileged
class. Nowadays, the old villas are in ruins,
and the town is known more for its oceanfront
seafood stalls than for its beaches, which are
narrow and stony, offering just a few slivers of
sand. For the moment at least, Krong Kep has a
real ‘out of the way’ feel to it - jungled
mountains, empty beaches and few tourist
services. The main road winds along the
oceanfront, through the crab market and past
small beaches and ritzy villas now crumbling in
disrepair. Kep's current raison d'etre is fresh
seafood, especially crab. No trip to Kep is
complete without at least one seaside picnic.

air-condition
busses straight
to Kep (about 3
or 4 hours,
about 5 USD). In
the capital, the
bus station is
at the Olympic
Stadium opposite
Wat Pre'ah Budh

Minibusses in
Phnom Penh
depart from
Damkohr Market
("Psah Damkohr").
Make very sure
they go to Kep,
not to Kampot
only! (Currently
there are
minibusses to
Kep only between
12 lunchtime and
about 2.30 pm)

taxi is another
option; ask at
Damkohr Market
Private taxi from Phnom
Penh to Kep takes 2-3 hr and costs around USD
25.-. Pick-ups and share-taxis
leave for Kep town from Phsar Daem Koh, or Deam
Koh market, Phnom Penh, early morning. The cost
is about USD 3.- per seat.
